New World Awaiting

The World
It's June in the year 1997. The world we know, as we know it.

The Event
There is a supernova burning in the night sky. It has been there for weeks growing brighter and larger with each passing night. Suddenly during the hours of dark in the western hemisphere it exploded with a strange green light which remained brilliant through one full rotation of the planet.

The Result
We're still not sure exactly what happened. It may have been the splitting of the universe onto an alternate track, it may be a huge hallucination, or just possibly the odd gods of chaos smiling on us, but it changed. All the Homo Sapiens vanished, completely with out a trace. It must have been instantaneous because vehicles were left driverless, food uneaten, and baths filling. There were survivors though, the furrs.
How do you describe a furr? There are as many descriptions as there are beings that wear the fur. But this they have in common. The Homo Sapian form and mind-set really doesn't fit too well. There are the MUCKers, those that live in virtual reality on the great world wide internet. There are the Lifestylers, those who feel that they are trapped in the wrong species or body. There are those that have totems, guides, and beings that are a large part of their lives, and there are the *others*.
Those that believed are here. The ones that wanted to be. The ones that most wished to be their true desire, their furry selves.

The Gathering.
On the eastern seaboard there is a community, a restored colonial village, Williamsburg. It seems to be a gathering point for the survivors as it has a certain attraction for all. As Time passes, many of the survivors head in that direction. This is not an imperative, just an attraction. Some never make it.

The Technology
As time passes, the technological world quickly grinds to a stop. No one to turn the valves, throw the switches, repair the devices that made the world of the 1990's what it was. The first thing to go is the great electrical grid that shuttled power around the country. Quickly followed by transportation and communications. The existing fuel stocks remain to be utilized, but anything that is dependent on them will soon end.

The New Technology.
With the end of the power grids and the resultant electromagnetic interference, the great ley lines of the earth have returned to the power and use they originally had. At least this is a belief held by some. Even if this is not the cause, magic has returned to the world. Actually it may be just strangely advanced physics rather than magic because if follows rules.
Magic has a cost and limits. It works for some, but often poorly. The rule of conservation of energy is still a law of the universe. There is only so much {choose your own word} in any area. It can be loaned, given, borrowed, stored up, and sometimes stolen, but it has a finite quantity. The greater the population and the higher the use in any physical area, the less there is available to each individual. The use of alternating current destroys the {again your choice of word} in proportion to its use. Direct current does not seem to have this effect unless it's powering a magnet, then things get strange.
Psi is, as it allways was, a fact. It works for some but at a cost. In fact what many are calling magic may just be Psi gone wild. We're not sure but our farspeakers pay with headaches as do the healers and others. Luckily the effects are light and diminish with practice and skill.

The Inhabitants
We are now what we always wished to be. That persona that was always within us  now  lives. For the MUCKers, and the others that lived on the great world wide net, the physical characteristics, the gender, the abilities that were, are. Those that wished to be, are as they wished. The guides, the totems, and the lore, are there. But the world, Gaea, is the world that always was.
